Grant Funding Opportunity for Local Entrepreneurs and Organisations
October 2025.
A community grant funding programme has launched to support small businesses and non-profit organisations in Parys, Tumahole, and Schonkenville. Funded by Ilikwa Solar, which is currently under construction in the area and is expected to begin operating before the middle of next year, this initiative aims to strengthen local enterprises, create employment opportunities, and help build a more resilient and inclusive economy.
The programme provides grant funding and capacity-building support to help small businesses grow and operate sustainably. It also assists emerging non-profit organisations and social enterprises working to address key community needs and priorities.
Grounded in the Asset-Based Community-led Development (ABCD) approach, the programme places community members at the centre of local development. It focuses on identifying and mobilising existing strengths and resources within the community, encouraging residents to drive their own development and create lasting impact.
“The programme focuses on empowering residents to become active change agents, supporting those who are improving the lives of others or have plans to make a positive difference in their communities,” said Jo-Anne Brown, Country Economic Development Manager for Ilikwa Solar. “Our goal is for local entrepreneurs to strengthen their businesses, enhance sustainability, and create much-needed employment opportunities in the area.”
The types of businesses supported through this funding include those involved in youth development, agriculture, education, environment, welfare, and health, amongst others. Eligible entrepreneurs may apply for grants ranging from R1,000 to R20,000.
“What we value about the ABCD approach is that it amplifies the potential and capacity that already exist within our communities,” added Brown. “Research shows that when people use their own skills and resources to create the changes they desire, development becomes far more effective and sustainable.”
