A New Approach to Renewable Energy Supply in South Africa

Ilikwa Solar is helping reshape the way South African businesses access clean energy through a flexible new model called a Renewable Energy Supply Agreement (RESA).

When Ilikwa Solar reached financial close in October 2024, it not only marked the start of construction on a 50 MW solar PV facility in the Free State — it also introduced a new way for businesses to power their operations sustainably. Rather than locking into traditional 20-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), Ilikwa’s power will be supplied under shorter, more adaptable contracts known as RESAs.

As the country continues to face electricity supply constraints and pressure to reduce emissions, RESAs offer a compelling solution. They enable more businesses — especially large energy users — to take control of their energy strategies without the burden of long-term obligations.

With growing interest in short-term, cost-effective, and low-carbon energy options, Ilikwa Solar is at the forefront of delivering tailored solutions that respond to market demand and national needs.
